ABSU "Absu" - Review.

Photobucket

Fuck this is going to be a pain in the ass. Absu always have these long and crazy song titles. But this album is worth it. I know I got stares, when this came out, when I said that this was one of my favorite Absu albums, ALMOST up there with the classics. I still think that. I think they have done some of their best work on this one. I have been a fan since the start. Some still say "Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L." is their best and some say "Tara". And although I love those albums still, this one is up there and if you liked those you will like this one. There are some parts I don't like, which knocked it down a notch from those classics. But this is still awesome. Of course it all starts with the drumming. FUCKING AMAZING drumming by Proscriptor as usual. He is still one of the best around! But the riffs are also amazing as well. "The Absu Of Eridu And Erech" starts it off with the blasting chaos and double bass breaks. As usual, Absu has their own style. A mix of Black Metal and Dark Thrash Metal. At times very progressive, but always great. And of course tons of time changes. But the funny thing is that they are very easy to get into and listen to. You don't have to be in the mood to "take it all in". Absu have always been very catchy to me. The song ends with a great battle march type part then goes back to the double bass, then blasting, madness. "Nightfire Canonization" is next with a classic thrash riff. And goes for the throat with the fast thrash beat. Great double bass parts follow and goes back and forth with some solos at the end. "Amy" is next and is a bit slower with a great double bass and melodies. The riffs on this song are some of the best on the album. The next part has an off tempo riff that is also chaotic. This song is a mid paced banger. "Nunbarshegunu" is next and has a mystical feeling to it at the start, but then gets fast and crazy. Some great time changes that go from mid paced to fast. "13 Globes" blasts away fast as fuck with great solos and shreiking vocals. No clean vocals this time from Proscriptor. But most of the songs are total chaos! haha. "Of The Dead Who Never Rest In Their Tombs Are The Attendance Of Familiar Spirits..." (see I fucking told you, there is even more but my fingers are hurting) is next up and starts off with the classic mid paced double bass riff orgy and then goes into a killer old school thrash fast part with great guitar solos. This song has tons of catchy melody, but I think the album does as a whole. Now this is a great song, but I fucking hate the keyboard part towards the end. It sounds like a fucking circus. It's really bad. It does have a creepy horror movie type part at the end of the song after the gay keyboards, but let's move on. "Magic(K) Square Cipher" starts with a great set of riffs a killer double bass again. This has some progressive time changes, then gets fast. It ends with the usual drum gymnastics and the guitarists even keep up! Not one of the better songs overall, but "In The Name Of Auebothiabathabaithobeuee" makes up for it and is one of my favorite songs on here. Fast and chaotic. Great riffs. And then next, another fast banger "Girra's Temple". Crazy blasting and regular thrash riffs converge and fight each other. Great double bass and riff in the middle and the end of this song fucking rules with the insane speed. Another stand out track! "Those Of The Void Will Re-Enter" starts off with a weird intro that sounds like naked creeps waking up in some weird universe? Hmmm maybe I'm a creep? When the riffs and beats kick in though, a lot of evil melody and then a crazy fast part. I love the next mid paced riff and it's trade of of slow and fast double bass. The naked creeps come back at the end. This part also sounds like a science documentary with Leonard Nemoy doing the narraration ( "In Search Of...." anyone?) but then kicks in again with a killer fast part at the end. "Sceptre Command" comes next and has some killer fast/ double bass work going on. The interplay with the vocals/drums/guitars is classic as usual. The whole album makes me want to play air guitar, but this song especially. Fuck, the whole album makes me want to play air drums as well! "Ye Uttuku Spells" has a different type of melodic intro riff, the goes into the usual crazy Absu double bass part. The middle gets very progressive then blasts away and back to the intro parts again. "Twix Yesterday, The Day & The Morrow" is just a creepy outro to the album. But a fitting end. There are a couple of clunker parts that almost made me take the fucking album off, but for the most part is is an amazing piece of work. The production is clear but everything is heavy enough and these guys can fucking play! There are some guest spots on here like Maniac/Mayhem doing some solos, Nornagest/Enthroned doing backing vocals and even Equitant comes back to do the outro. There is a limited edition of this that includes a live DVD of a show in Montreal, Canada in June 2009. The packaging is top notch as usual with these guys. Look for it on Candlelight Records. Mythological Occult Metal indeed!
