Azaghal - Teraphim Review

Azaghal - Teraphim
Moribund Records, September 28th, 2009

Black Heavy Metal!
Yes, this is the best way to describe the sound of Azaghal's latest album "Teraphim"
This is no typical finnish release and actually it isn't a typical black metal release at all!
The traditional-style riffing is clearly dominant throughout the whole album, as well as the low distortion of the guitar!
The drums sound partially quite sterile thanks to the cymbals but that's no problem afterall, since they fortify the cold character of the songs.
Concerning the vocals "Teraphim" awaits the listener with choirs, clean vocals but mostly a gravelly voice that carves your skull! Literally!
Overall the album got a infectious but deadly groove!
My favourite songs throughout are "Elilum – Suuri Tyhjyys", "Filosof" and the title track "Teraphim – Puhdistava Tuli" all of them capture the wild, melodic spirit of this release perfectly!
But the other tracks dont need to hide behind them!
If you are into unconventional but orthodox black metal from Nifelheim to Burzum, you should give this beast a listen!

7,5/10

Herr Nekro MMIX.
