Gravespawn "Practorian Malficus" - Review.

Photobucket

Gravespawn is one of the better local Southern California black metal bands that have come about since this genre exploded in popularity. The CDR starts off with a fucking bang. The blasts and screams of "Sword Of The Godslayer" start off this blasphemous offering. Killer transitions between fast and double bass. I like the evil melodies that Gravespawn has, never gets too melodic, always fits the mood. This song is mostly a fast ripper but has a killer middle passage that is a highlight. "Indoctrination Of Apostasy" is next. A lot of great double bass drums, drummer Mattias is a madman on this recording. "A Red Moon Rises Over Transylvania" has a slow and evil riff to start. Vocalist Lord Malkuth has some screams that sound like his throat is bleeding, and you can hear the pain in the voice, if only most black metal vocalists were this good, hehe. You can hear his words, yet the voice shreds over the music. The song then explodes into changing fast parts, very killer. "The Exalted Tyranny" has more of the same killer evil melodies in the riffs, before it takes off with the double bass. The sad riff interplay from mid to fast in the middle is great. "Satanic Terrorists Elite" ends the recording. Very frantic fast song. And same as the others, GREAT! I actually didn't want this recording to end, and I want to hear more. For now this will not leave my player. Gravespawn have the influence of the greats from Norway, with a little older Immortal, Gorgoroth, even older Mayhem and older Darkthrone thrown in. But in no way a cheap ass copy or poser band. They have their own twist on it. Guitarist Relik Sepiroth has been at this since 2004 and it sounds like the line up is set and strong. The production of this recording is good for what Gravespawn is doing here. Very dry and everything comes through, sounds like it was done live, which is good! This is a band to watch out for in 2010! All you black metal kiddies jump on the band wagon while they are still kvlt! Because Gravespawn will be signed soon! They also have shirts, so hit them up about that, as well as "Practorian Malficus"! Some great USBM!
