OBITUARY "Darkest Day" - Review.

Photobucket

Fucking Obituary! One of the gods of the first commercial wave of American Death Metal and one of the innovators since Xecutioner first started scaring people in Tampa, Florida back in the mid 80s. "List Of Dead" kicks this album off and it is classic Obituary. It is a fast banger with a the usual Donald Tardy solid double bass breaks. John Tardy has "The Voice" still, even though you can tell it's a little worn, still sicker than most of the guys out there. This song simply rules! "Blood To Give" is the usual slower/ mid paced Obituary banger with the tom drums intro solid riffs and great drumming from the death metal John Bonham. It picks up fast at the end which is great with the guitar solos. "Lost" starts with a similar tom drums intro with some cool guitar solos and has a riff that could have been on "Slowly....." or "Cause..." classic Obituary. "Outside My Head" has an almost doomy guitar intro that picks up with a killer mid paced double bass drum part. "Payback" has a quicker mid paced start with another classic Obituary riff. "Your Darkest Day" is next with it's slow creep drum build up and feedback. This one is a nice and slow banger. "This Life" picks up the mid paced pace again with double bass and solos. "See Me Now" and "Fields Of Pain" are both mid paced bangers and then "Violent Dreams" picks up the pace with a fast and violent banger. "Truth Be Told" and "Forces Realign" are both mid paced and the last song "Left To Die" is a slow doom banger song. Ok so notice how I didn't spend much time with each track and just gave a short description? Well it's fucking Obituary. You know what you get with them. They have 3 speeds and write similar riffs sometimes and John Tardy seems like he is saying some weird shit or nothing at all. But they are legends and still kick ass. Yes it does drag here and there and it not a classic album but any means but it is fucking Obituary. Don't expect change or fancy song writing with these guys. It is actually fucking killer that these guys still write in the same style that they did way back in the mid 80s. They have a formula and they stick with it and it works fucking great! Good job by Candlelight for signing Obituary.
