ANAAL NATHRAKH - "In The Constellation Of The Black Widow" Review

Photobucket

First off, I hate this band's name. It is like Amon Amarth gone gay. But anyways, hahaha, this album starts out with the title track. The vocals are fucking weird and all over the place. The music is black metal mixed with grindcore. There are fucked up screams and howling, deep, deep vocal effects and even chanting on this one. "I Am the Wrath of Gods and the Desolation of the Earth Music" is more of the same, without the chanting and deep effects on the vocals. Total blasts and screaming. The vocals get quite funny at times, but also disturbing. I think the guy has issues hahaha. "More Of Fire Than Blood" is next with an awesome riff to start the grind, that goes into a cool skank part. There is finally a mid paced banger part, but wait, the vocals sound like Killswitch Inflames. A good song just got ruined! "The Unbearable Filth Of The Soul" is next. It is a bit slower, more mid paced. The riffs are downtuned and sound like Disturbed or something. These guys sound like a weird mix of Emperor, Pig Destroyer, Today Is The Day, and new heavy rock/metal at parts. The singer has quite a bit of range with his style. There are moments of greatness on here with some of the arrangements and riffs, but it goes to crap at some point. "Terror In The Mind Of God" has a total Extreme Noise Terror part that rules but then goes into a lame chorus. "So Be It" starts off total classic Swedish Death Metal. And yup, goes gay with a singing part. At this point it's hard to tell if the drums are real or a drum machine. The rest of the album is more of the same: weird chunky new style metal riff, lame melodic part, killer riff, then lame vocals all of the place, GRIND! These guys have their moments, but the crap drags it down. I know people out there would dig this. It's NOT black metal, only a few parts have a total black metal sound. This is like a lot of hybrid stuff these days, throw a bunch of styles in a blender and mix it up. This is out on Candlelight Records.
