Merrimack - Grey Rigorism Review

Merrimack - Grey RigorismMoribund/Osmose Productions, August 24th, 2009

I've been listening to Merrimack's "Grey Rigorism" for a whole week now...
It's overall coldness with sublime but catching Rock 'n Roll grooves is quite contagious and before you know you've listened to it again and again... and again!
Notable for this album is the dominant guitarplay with the frequent use of disharmonic accords who basically stand against the straight drumplay and the minimal basslines, creating a chaotic and cold atmosphere.
Further is this album separated by two intermissions into a grotesque three piece opera.
With Grey Rigorism, Merrimack created an album that is both versatile and orthodox!
Especially the rituals "The Golden Door", the title track "Grey Rigorism" and the final opus "By Thy Grace" extasised me as I never heard this band before.
The span of tempos varies from doomish to various decently placed neckbrakers with some industrial tendencies and spoken word performances.
Overall I can clearly say: this is one of the few great pieces of Black Metal I had the pleasure of listening to lately!

8,5/10
