1349 "Revelations Of The Black Flame" - Review.

1349 "Revelations Of The Black Flame" - Review.

FUCK MAN! THE SCREAMING INTRO IS DISTURBING AS FUCK! STOP FUCKING SCREAMING! HAHA.

But good job 1349, on the intro screaming, it sounds like souls going to hell for sure. "Invocation" is the name of this track that starts the album. After the weak are tortured in hellfire, the track then gets all Pink Floyd/let's do some acid and trip out man. Almost "heaven" like. ALSO, good job 1349.

Towards the middle part of the song, a riff then comes in and the drums come in. Hmm, the drums almost sound "industrial". Once everyone comes in, it almost sounds like a black metal Godflesh. Anyone that knows me, knows that I'm a huge old school Godflesh fan! So this is a good thing so far! Not bad at all.I had heard 1349 were going to surprise on this album. And so far so good with the surprise.

"Serpentine Sibilance" is next. Starts off slow and prodding like the intro. Good riffs. The vocals are strange. Maybe too many effects on there? But different for sure. 1349 have slowed down as far as I have gotten here. It does start to pick up, but not by much. Then the fast part hits like a punch in the face to end the song. Not a typical black metal blast part either, different style.

"Horns" is next and is very spacey and dark. This is more of an interlude. Like "2010-A Space Odyssey" gone to hell. So dare I say that 1349 have gotten "experimental" with this album?

"Maggot Fetus... Teeth Like Thorns" has a good intro black metal riff. Man the drums sound like a machine, yet done well here. It's just funny to me. It gets hard to tell if it is a real drummer or a machine, especially during the blast part of this song. The vocals have more of a tortured Tom G. Warrior vibe to them, instead of a typical black metal shriek.

"Misanthropy" is next with it's piano, fucked up tape loop interlude. The end has some creepiness to it.

Which leads into "Uncreation" and it's piano/slow guitar intro. Once everyone comes in, I'm telling you, black metal Godflesh! This album is quite slow paced, STILL, overall. Almost a Neurosis feel to it. The middle heavy mid paced part is cool, yet gets boring. But it is still good. The fast part ending is quite impressive with it's shredding guitar solos and riffs.

The godamn surprise of the century is the Pink Floyd cover "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun". Now, believe it or not, and I know this might be a shocker! I'm a big Pink Floyd fan as well! So let's see what we have here: after giving it a chance, it is OK but boring. The drums are horrible, or if that is a drum in the background? hmmm, and not the tribal stuff like the original. Anyways, SKIP! I'll give them credit for trying this though.

"Solitude" is next. And continues the Pink Floyd spacey stuff, which is cool. Just surprising on a "black metal" album.

"At The Gate" is the album closer. Starts off almost like old Cathedral, which is also good cause I loved their early stuff! haha. But the riff is killer and evil as fuck! The drums almost ruin it at first. It sounds cool when everyone comes in together though. All fucked up and spacey! Like "Jason X" but good! haha.

Now I'm going to be honest here. 1349 are one of the most over hyped bands ever! I have seen them live and they are good, not classic, but good. Ravn is quite a front man and the guitarists can windmill with the best of them. And the reviews that I have seen in the past were sucking these guys cocks. "Revelations Of The Black Flame" is a surprise. Most typical black metal kids will not like this. 1349 have moved forward for sure. At small points it reminds me of the classic and mighty Deathspell Omega (one of the few "avant garde" or "progressive" bands that I like). Not totally influenced or even sounding like those French lunatics, just kind of how 1349 has a Neurosis gone evil as fuck black metal style on here, that Deathspell Omega does so well.

1349 is nowhere near as good as Deathspell, but I see similarities here. Anyways, this fucker is hard to rate. I think it will grow on me, or I may never listen to it again. Who knows? It gets a little boring, but it is a good one considering. And it does stand out from the black metal crowd. Out on Candlelight Records.
