DEFIANCE "The Prophecy" - Review.

Photobucket

With this whole "thrash" thing coming back, you have some bands that are too young to remember that wave, or weren't even born yet. And now we have some bands that are re-forming. Defiance is one of the bands that is re-forming. These Bay Area thrashers put out a decent thrash album in 1988 "Product Of Society". Defiance was always one of those bands that were good, yet maybe didn't stand out enough to really become great. They also put out a couple of more albums before breaking up. They have come back to give it another try. The first song on this album "Prion" is a typical representation of the Bay Area Thrash sound. They sound like Testament around the "Practice"/ "Souls" era. Song 2 is the title track and has cool drumming at the start with a mid/fast paced part that goes into a bad chorus that made me change the song. Next up is "Bastard Son" with it's acoustic guitar/ electric solos ala Testamnet. "The War Inside" has that mosh mid paced riff that will have the kids headbanging. Not a bad song. "Fuel The Fire" is faster, but the mix sounds like it lost the bass at first? "Eschaton" is a mellow intro before "Sloth" and it's fast pace. I wish the drums weren't so triggered. Why do drummers do that? The album stays in the same formula after that with a little bit of each of the first few songs and styles throughout. There is also some annoying Pantera influence that pops up here and there, which makes me want to puke. This isn't bad at all. And respect to these guys for being part of one of the Bay Area waves of thrash. If you like 2nd/3rd rate Testament, this is for you. One complaint to a lot of thrash bands these days, where is the manic pace? The best thrash albums ("Reign In Blood", "Bonded By Blood", "Eternal Nightmare", "Darkness Descends" etc......) were RELENTLESS! They grabbed you by the throat and never let up, whether the songs were fast or mid/slow bangers. Those albums made you bleed and never let up until they went silent and you were in shock staring at the speakers. Bring back that feeling! If you can! Released by Candlelight Records.
