DESTROYER 666 "Defiance" - Review.

These metal mongers have been making some of the best black/thrash/death anthems ever since forming in Australia in 1994. With "Defiance" being their 4th album, it must be hard to try and come up with another classic since their first three albums ("Unchain The Wolves", "Phoenix Rising" and "Cold Steel...For An Iron Age") are so fucking good and loved by the wolfpack horde that follows them. Not to mention the killer eps that also were releaseed throughout the last few years. Anyways, we are here to talk about "Defiance". Does it stand up to those albums mentioned earlier? Yes! Is it classic Destroyer 666? Yes! Is it as classic as those albums? Well to early to tell to be honest, because those three are so perfect and timeless and have been with us for years. This one is quite fucking great though and rarely left my player for about a month or so. The madness starts in typical D666 fashion with "Weapons Of Conquest". With a ripping opening riff and the thunderous double bass we have come to love. "Iam Not Decieved" starts with the classic D666 blast beats, then also kicks in with the double bass, into those classic Destruction style beats, to the anthem chorus, then back and forth! HAHA FUCKING AWESOME! "Blood For Blood" is the slower/midpaced banger and comes third. The awesome melodies are there as well! "The Baricades Are Breaking" then brings back the fast, blast beat banger! How Mersus can blast away like that and with so much power is a mystery to me. "Stand Defiant" is next and is another mid paced banger. The riffs are there with the melodies and those melodies always sound evil and strong and not gay haha. Let the headbanging get even crazier with "Path To Conflict" with one of the best headbanging riffs for the front of the stage ever! "A Thousand Plagues" is another blasting fast one (D666 are THE BEST at guitar solos during blast parts!) that also goes midpaced and then ends with the great ending chorus anthem. "Human All Too Human" is one of those moody anthems that should be playing as we watch the world burn. "Sermon To The Dead" is the last song. This is the only song that might fit totally on one of the Bathory viking inspired albums. Very slow, brooding and full of dark emotions. Not a big fan of the "singing" parts. But I guess it does add to the feeling of the song. The production is very good as well with guitars being nice and crisp. the drums are thunderous as well in the mix. All in all a great album and one of my picks for tops of 2009 for sure!
