Windfaerer
Glorybound(Demo)
self released 2009
Now me personally i am a sucker for good pagan/folk metal as long as it is done tastefully and done well,i am not much for the overly cheesy. So in my mail comes the 2 song demo from new jersey 3 piece WINDFAERER and their 2 song demo GLORYBOUND.Opening track IN THE WAKE OF WAR starts off hard hitting sounding very wintersun like but without the finnish gloom. The song moves along briskly, the folk elements are very hidden but they are there. The vocals tend to be buried in the mix a bit much at times, but the track is quite catchy and towards the end the tempo abruptly changes to a faster riff and blast beats which totally caught me off guard, reminding me of early borknagar which in my book is a good thing.Second track THE GREAT FIRE pummels you from the get go with fast meaty riffs and blasts a plenty with a little flute in the background which in the case of this track adds to the atmosphere instead of taking away from it.This track is probably a more defined explanation of what this band is all about as it is a longer track at just over 6 minutes and there is a lot more variety going on here,i definately enjoyed this song a lot more then the first. While it seems that WINDFAERER borrow heavily from scandanavian folk/black metal such as wintersun, borknagar, even at times they reminded me of windir and ensiferium, but underneath all of those influences you will find a band that is definately talented and well on their way to finding their own sound. So in a market that like many is over saturated with shit,New Jerseys WINDFAERER are definately on to something and even though the demo has it's flaws(way to short,it's over right when you start to get into it!) they definately leave you wanting more and i am really interested in hearing what they do next.Keep your eyes out for this band and if you can get a hold of the demo!
8.5/10
