Another chat with some local friends, Unholy Lust. You see, there are some killer bands here in our local scene, so I'm trying to bring them to the masses. I tracked down Guitarist/Vocalist Alvaro for a talk. Another killer band to watch out for in 2010!
Interview By: Mike Abominator
1. How are things with Unholy Lust these days? How is the debut album coming along and what will it be called?
Alvaro: The band is coming along great, the current line up with Franco Gonzales on guitar, Humberto Medina on drums, Kelsey Wilson on bass and myself on guitar/vocals. I think we are stronger than ever because everyone is pitching in and doing their part. I guess we have a good balance of business and family. The album is coming along great but with a little bit of a headache in the beginning. We had Adriane Villanueva of Dungeon Studios help us out and do his part. He helped us pull through and get the best out of us. He played a major role in the recording. The title of the album is “Taste The Sin Through The Fire” with 13 tracks, 11 songs and 2 intros.
2. Where was the album recorded and with who? How was that process? And who is putting it out and when is it unleashed on the world?
Alvaro: The album was recorded at The Dungeon Studios in L.A. with Adriane Villanueva. We were all kind of nervous; it was our first time recording something official. A lot of little details to our music that we were missing. Luckily we had Adriane there to help us out and basically school us. He put us through boot camp and I’m really grateful for that. I feel good that we went there and had the opportunity to work with him. He has a good background of music, he knows his shit. The cherry has been popped haha. Blood Harvest is putting it out. We are really thankful that he saw something in our music even with our raw material. I’m not too sure how long it would have taken us to put something out if he hadn’t got in contact with us. He opened the gates. No date yet, we still need to send it in to him to have it pressed, hopefully sometime in March around my birthday, it would be a nice birthday present.

3. Unholy Lust is part of the Southern California underground metal scene. What do you think about the scene and what sets Unholy Lust apart from other bands here in SoCal?
Alvaro: I think it’s a big scene, there’s a lot of people into metal. But there are a lot of fakes, just following what’s cool, not really being there for the music. But on the hand there are plenty of diehards out there that I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to meet and throw back a couple cold ones with. Cheers! That’s kind of a hard one, other than leather and spikes, death, obscurity and Satanism. We are just trying to be a real band with real shit. We aren’t trying to be more “evil” than the next band. We’re just doing our thing passing our message…”Blood, Sin and Blasphemy”

4. For those who have never heard of Unholy Lust, what are the main influences on the band in both sound and appearance/image?
Alvaro: Fuck, there’s a lot of influences. The speed of Slayer and they’re whole image, Kerry King with his Warlock and nail gauntlet. To Possessed with the armor and satanic lyrics. To the aggressive style of Sadistic Intent. I could go on and on. But those would be our main 3 influences.

5. How have the live rituals been around the area for Unholy Lust? Any plans on playing outside of Southern California? Have you done any gigs outside of this area?
Alvaro: What can I say the shows have been really good, fans come out and support. There’s been the occasional gig where the turnouts not as great as we hoped. But I would rather have 5 diehards instead of 100 fakes. Yea we would love to play outside of SoCal, just money is tight, plus the name is new to the outside world. Hopefully the album helps spread the name. We did a small 2 day tour with our good friends Ritual Torture, San Diego and New Mexico that’s the furthest we’ve been out.

6. You fuckers like to drink! Tell me what beers and hard shit would be on the Unholy Lust tour rider each night?
Alvaro: Holy water and lemonade.. Come on what do you think! Some Crown Royal, good old whiskey, can’t go wrong with that. Some ice cold Becks and Gatorade for the hangover. Basically any alcoholic beverage except gin, I hate that shit!

7. Tell me about the formation of the band. When did you start playing this music and what made you want to take being a metal head to the next level?
Alvaro: We started off as punk band around 2002 under the name Los Winoes, even then we were a little more aggressive than the typical punk band. We’ve had a lot of changes back and forth. A few different drummers a few bass players and a couple different guitarist. It took awhile to get to where we are now. The current lineup is solid, no changes anytime soon. What made me take it to the next level was I wanted to live for this, make writing music my life. It would mean a lot to be known for writing some sick music that people respect and appreciate.

8. What are your first memories of heavy metal and what bands and albums did you first get into back in those days?
Alvaro: At first a buddy of mine made me a mix tape with Slayer, Sepultura and Venom. From there I found other bands like Autopsy, Exhumed, and Carcass, the list goes on.

9. What are some of the best concerts/and or bands that you have ever seen in the live show performance?
Alvaro: Best concert would have to be Slayer, they always have a strong set. To this day I still feel the same energy from them. It’s kind of hard, some of the past shows are a little blurry, all I know is that I had a good time and the bands were great.

10. What is it about the old school way that makes Unholy Lust want to play that style, and not a new school version? What does the old school mean to you?
Alvaro: The whole leather, spikes, darkness, fog, lights, fire, and the anger makes us want to play that old school style. You have the diehard fans that go and bleed for the bands, feeding us with that adrenaline we crave. It’s a challenge, you have to prove to the diehards that you’re as good as the bands back in the day. Not many bands can accomplish that, it takes guts. It’s a way of life, we’ve built our music and image off of it. Not trying to dog the new shit, they are talented musicians for the most part, It’s just not my thing.

11. What topics do you maniacs write your songs about? I would say deep, emotional feelings and a lot of remembering lost loves and hardcore break ups like Gravehill yes?
Alvaro: Exactly! You took the words right out of my mouth. Haha. We sing about Satanism the occult, gore, incorporated some sex and lust, war and hatred. Whatever feels right, it’s a blend of things.

12. If you could pick one crazy ass show to end the world with, Unholy Lust would play of course, what other 9 bands would you pick? A 10 band "END OF THE FUCKING WORLD FEST"!
Alvaro: 1. Slayer 2.Morbid Angel 3. Possessed 4. Dissection 5. Venom 6. Dark Throne 7. Grotesque 8. Bathory 9. Death. I know some of these people are no longer with us but they would come back with us to play the show, It’s the end of the world and all.

13. What are the plans for Unholy Lust in 2010 and beyond?
Alvaro: Our plans are to play bigger and better gigs. Tour the country, even play outside the country. Also record a second album showing our progress. The music has gotten heavier and stronger, we are hoping to build it and keep putting out material. We hope to pick up some diehard fans along the way.
