IMMINENT DEATH - Interview.

Photobucket

I met Chris and his Bass player Weinberg at California Metal Fest last year in which Gravehill played. These boys came and talked to me for quite a while and I was impressed for not only their old school attitude, but how young they were. The ages of the band members ranged from 14-17 years old at the time. They reminded me of myself when I was a young buck, and these kids knew their shit! I have tried to support them as much as possible ever since. This is a band to watch out for here in the local scene and soon worldwide. Mark my words, they will be a force in the future! I had a talk with Vocalist/Guitarist Chris to see what is going on with their band IMMINENT DEATH.

Interview By: Mike Abominator.

1. Hails Chris. Thanks for your time. What is going on right now with Imminent Death?

Chris: Hails Mike! thanks for giving me this opportunity man.Right now imminent is working on our first "real" demo.we're almost done with guitar bass and vocal tracks and will start tracking drums soon.its gonna be about 8-9 songs with about two nobody's heard.we've just got a new guitarist and are looking to make some major advancements in 2010.its looking pretty sick.

2. You guys are pretty young an reside in Orange County. What made you decide to play death metal?

Chris: well when we started a year ago there weren't very many bands in our area (Huntington Beach)that were playing death metal.so me and our old guitarist jake, were just really wanting to play fast, aggressive music,in the vein of slayer and pantera.it was kind of deathrash at first but the more we delved in death metal, the more we found love for it.when our old drummer joined and eventually even our current bassist wineberg,we were just starting to play heavier, darker shit.we didn't call it death metal because we were just playing what we loved out of slayer and adding elements that made it heavier. now we're all about staying death metal and not straying from it.we experiment but  more so experimentation with heavier song structures and things.

3. You guys have an old school sound though. And talking with you, you like the older era of death metal. What is it about the good old days that you like more than the current "new school" death metal scene?

Chris: The old school bands gravitated to me more because of how dark all the imagery and the song writing were.nowadays bands have shit haircuts and like,19 lettered sentences as names.they don't give off that eerie sense that you get from left hand path or tomb of the mutilated.most of it isn't even about being dark and heavy and pushing the boundaries, its more about their image and how they can break into the mainstream, which not at all what i believe death metal should stand for.it should be dark fast aggressive and fucking heavy!

4. What are your first memories of getting into metal? Did your parents have stuff around the house? Or did you discover it on your own?

Chris: my mom love old school hard rock like sabbath,ac/dc and sammy hagar so i always had great music around growing up.when i reached about nine or ten,i started having a need for heavier stuff.i still get that feeling to this day.so from ac/dc and van halen i went to maiden, priest, motorhead and metallica.then one day i went to a record store and bought slayers reign in blood. and it blew my fucking mind.slayer still is one of my all time favorite bands because of the night i listened to that record like 9 times.from there i went from slayer to pantera to cannibal corpse to cryptopsy. it just needs to be heavier for me to like it!

5. Do you think people out there will not take you seriously because of the young ages of the band members?

Chris: well now  im the youngest member and i'm just 15.if people do,their concentrating to hard on what the band members are then the actual music.most people don't care and most bands were friends with are young.when it becomes shit is when we have to talk to promoters or elder bands and their just like"what are you kidding me?".it sucks man but its also what makes us different, because a lot of kids our age relate with us.

6. Who are some of your vocal influences? And what are the influences of the band?

Chris: Martin Van Durnen,Chris barnes,Chuck Schuldiner,Lord Worm, frank mullen, jeff walker,Glen Benton, the list is endless.im more of the mid range to erik's gutturals so it evens out.our influences are different for each member,as a band,i think our main influences are suffocation, exhumed, pestilence, cannibal corpse, vader and deicide.

7. So you guys have played a few shows now. Tell me about them. How was the response and what bands did you play with?

Chris: ah man we've had some great shows with local bands and the crowd reaction is sick and were at our prime and we've had bad shit like the infamous amp incident that you went to and one we did at hogues where i was being a total prick.we've played with obituary, goatwhore, warbringer, deception, deformed humanity, madrost, visceral decay and many other bands that kick ass! we got some new shows coming up that will be sick!

8. What are some of the best bands that you have seen live?

Chris: uhmm warbringer is ferocious live.most people are turned off by the thrash revival thing but they are a really tight, really energetic band! also i've seen suffocation and exodus just pillage live.i've actually been to suffo twice and had my ass kicked by security.Decrepit Birth is probably the best i've ever seen, period.also madrost is a really great live band.

9. OK Chris, this is important! You are at home, news of nuclear warfare is all over the news. The clouds are coming to your area. But there is a bunker near by that will be safe. You only have room for 10 albums to take with you to the bunker, what albums are they?

Chris: ahhh fuck so many good records,in no particular order
bloodbath,nightmares made flesh
goatwhore, carving out the eyes of god
cryptopsy,none so vile
cannibal corpse,tomb of the mutilated
dismember,like an everflowing stream
pestilence,cosuming impulse
entombed,left hand path
suffocation,effigy of the forgotten
decrepit birth,diminishing between worlds
repulsion,horrified

10. Any last words to the maniacs out there?

Chris: don't take shit from anyone.don't cut your hair, grow it long, stay fucking heavy metal and don't compromise EVER!thanks again mike.
