Endstille interview 8-08

1)First off thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me,i appreciate it very much.

2)I want to start off by asking about the new album. It has been almost a year since it's release. How do you feel about the record now and how has the response been to it?

I'm still feeling very well about Endstilles Reich. Even one year later I like to listen to that album.
The response was very good, too. Our goal was to succeed also in countries like the US for example. I think that worked very well, more than we hoped for.

3)You guys have been around about 8 years now.Was this always your goal as a band to be where you are now,or are surprised to be where your at.How important is success to you as a band?

Our main goal always was and still is to make good music. We've got an exact oppinion how Black Metal should sound like and we know how Black Metal shouldn't sound like. I think that's very important, too.
Of course sometimes I'm a bit suprised how successful Endstille is. Aspecially after this festivalseason. Imagine your playing your music on stage infront of about 20000 people. That's amazing.

4)You have released 6 records since 2002. Do you find it easy to consistently write new material? What inspires you to write and do you ever feel a lack of fresh ideas especially when it comes to lyrical content?

It's getting always easier to write new material, because we became a very good working team in the past 8 years. When we're making a new song everyone knows what he has to do.
I always think that our strongest songs are that ones which were written in about 30 minutes. These songs are just comming out of you and you don't think about things like „does this part fit to that part" or things like that.
We never had an inspiration-problem. There are so many things gone or going wrong in this world. There's still material for about 500 CDs.

5)What bands were your biggest influence when you started? When did you first get involved in the black metal scene?

I think each member of Endstille has his roots in german Thrash Metal like Sodom, Destruction etc. Of course bands like Celtic Frost, Bathory or Venom had a big influence on us, too.
I think i first got in contact with Black Metal in the year 1994. If I remember it right it was the cd „Dark Funeral- Secrects of the Black Arts" which ruined my life. But I'm the youngest member of Endstille. The others are much clother to death and got in contact with that music years before me.

6)Since you have signed with regain records, how has this changed things for the band as a whole? How has your relationship been with then up until this point?

Regain did exactly what we expected from them. We wanted a label which could release our CDs worldwide. They did that- we're satisfied.

7)Your lyrical and image content seems to entirly come from the world war 2 era especially with the cover of the new cd being your hometown in ruins. What is your facination with this type of imagery?

We're just dealing with subjects we're getting in touch with or which belong to us. Some songs are about hate or religion and many of them are about german history. They aren't always about world war 2. For example the Navigator album is only about the first world war. It depands on the topic of the album. I can already tell you that the next CD won't deal with WW1 or WW2 but it will deal with german history again. But don't be affraid, we won't make songs about postwar hisory or current history.
And why we're making such songs? Because we're interested in that. Also when you switch on the TV you can be sure that you'll see an documentary about about german history or this insane austrian guy. That's just one example why we as germans get in touch with topics like that everywhere.

8)Being from germany im sure that you received alot of flack for the title of the new album.Has ther been an overwhelmingly negative response to this title. Im sure antifa wasn't very pleased? How have you handled/defended this subject?

We're used to this. If you're making cruel music with such topics there will always be people who try to damage you. Aspecially in Germany. People here haven't learned to get along with there own history. But we proofed that you can deal with this subject without being political.

9)You guys are touring mexico for the first time. What are your hopes for this tour? Will you guys be doing any more tours or are you content with festivals.

We expect a crazy and brutal audience. Mexican metalfans have a good reputation. I hope they live up to there reputation.
Hopefully next year when our next album will be released we're going on tour again.

10)Refering back to the last question, will you guys ever play here in the states or is that not something you care to do?

I would like to play in the US. If we get an offer for a tour in the states we would do that. I realized that there are now many people who would like to see us.

11)How do you feel the german black metal scene stacks up with the rest of the world?Any bands you would recommend?

I think there had been a time when german Black Metal was very bad. That was why we said: „Germany needs a Black Metal band".
But nowadays there're other good bands from Germany too. For example Graupel, Verdunkeln or Valgaldra. We also have some projects you'll hopefully hear of in future.

12)What can people expect from endstille the rest of this year and what will the future hold for you guys?

We're playing some more shows in Germany in october. Than in november we'll do that small tour in Mexico. After that we'll enter the studio and will record our next album. So when we're fast enough the album could be released in march or april. We'll see...

13)Thanks again for doing this interview.
Any final thoughts or comments?

Gute Nacht und Fuck Hell!!!
