THE ATLAS MOTH "A Glorified Piece Of Blue Sky" - Review.

Photobucket

Hmm. Very slow and doomy, melodic at the start with "A Night In Venus' Arms". Screaming vocals from hell. The song goes into a Neurosis part next, but still lots of guitar melody. There is alot going on vocal wise with different screams and growls and then some clean vocals that aren't bad. Sometimes these guys sound like they could be on the Hydra Head label. Then they also have some Daylight Dies type guitar interplay. There is a little bit too much going on sometimes. The song ends with a very spacey artsy fartsy part that makes me want to take acid. Professor Cantaloupe of GASP would be proud. I wonder if they do that live? Pretty cool. Next up after that 10 minute jam is the title track. Starts off spacey. Where is my tang and space boots godamit!? Then the riffs come and it is very Mogwai influenced. The drums come together with the guitars. Very cool. More indie rock than metal at first until the vocals come in screaming. Oh shit, back into space again! OK who hid my space suit fuckers? "Grey Wolves" is next with it's Eyehategod swagger that builds into an almost Melvins feel middle. The production fits the spacey-ness of everything. One of the best riffs for me is next when these guys get some brutal Godflesh/ almost Hellhammer heaviness going on. Some solos and then BLAST OFF again, next planet please. "Our Son, Our Saviour" starts heavy duty. One of these guys almost sounds like Van Drunen/Asphyx when he screams. Which is a good thing. These guys go from heavy ass stuff to the really mellow spacey stuff pretty well. I can hear some more Godflesh/Jesu influence within the songs as well. The rest of the album is typical and like the first few songs. Album closer "...Leads To A Lifetime On Mercury" is a stand out. Very Pink Floyd and builds up from space, to slow and melodic to the crushing ending with screaming. This is an interesting band to watch out for. I hear TONS of potential. Sometimes a little too much going on and chaotic. Pull back the reins so to speak and you will have something special. On Candlelight Records.
