BLUT AUS NORD "Memoria Vetusta II/Dialogue with the Stars" - Review.

Here, Blut Aus Nord release their 7th full length album. These French maniacs have been around since 1994 and are well respected in the Black Metal scene. They are very progressive and atmospheric. Not usually my cup of tea, but this is a good album. After the "Acceptance(Aske)" intro, it starts of with chaos, "Disciple's Libration: Lost in the Nine Worlds" kicks things off with the blast beats and screaming. It almost sounds typical for a bit, but very good. Just like with anything, if it's good it's good no matter if it's been done a million times before. And the black metal blasts and then double bass parts are there and strong. Then there is a mid paced part that starts things in a different direction. Reminds me of the more black metal moments of Dissection with the melodies. But that's a good thing. There are also some keyboards but they fit perfectly within the music and aren't over powering. Fuck man, some of these parts are so catchy in the middle. Very dark and emotional. Then back to fast, and mid paced guitar/keyboard harmonies at the end, this is a good song! These guys use the keyboards perfect. "The Cosmic Echoes of Non-Matter: Immaterial Voices of the Fathers" is next. Not a big fan of the riff that starts this song. The high parts to me are a little out of place. It gets better with the next set of riffs. And the fast riffs are cool. The middle of this song is very influenced by doom metal it seems. A lot of guitar interplay and harmonies back and forth. The song goes back and forth between fast and mid paced until the end and sounds good with that. "Translucent Body of Air: Sutta Anapanasati" is an acoustic intro with effects in the background. "The Formless Sphere: Beyond the Reason" is next and blasts away with an eerie keyboard playing in the background, very "spacey"? But the riffs are good. Not a bad song at all. It is mostly fast with a slow banger ending. The ending riffs and notes are fuking melodic and are very good. It goes almost from and evil vibe to a good vibe with the notes, very cool. "... the Meditant: Dialogue with the Stars" starts with an acoustic intro then goes for tons of mid paced style and dark melodies. Very epic sounding on this one. Reminds me a bit of the "Viking Era" of Bathory, which is a good thing! There is a very cool acoustic part in the middle and then it goes back to mid paced epicness! "The Alcove of Angels: Vipassana" blasts away with a cool fast riff/notes for quite a bit, then breaks into a mid paced part with the guitar melodies. At this point the album is starting to drag just a bit because the mid paced parts with the guitar melodies kind of sound the same. "Antithesis of the Flesh: ...and Then Arises a New Essence" also starts with blasting away and the riffs are good. So far the stronger tracks are at the front of the album. "Elevation" is the album closer and has a very strong feel to it, again very Bathory "Hammerheart" influenced. Killer instrumental. All in all a good album. I do like the first 2 albums they did "Ultima Thulee" and "Memoria Vetusta 1: Fathers Of The Icy Age" better, but this is their best work I think since those first 2. I will keep listening to this and I have a feeling that I will like it more and more.
